Leveraging digital health tools to improve access and equity – The public health perspective

Tuesday, December 13th from 2:00-3:30pm EST

Join Drs. Abdul El-Sayed, Juan Marquez, and Krishna Juluru as they share their experiences and perspectives on meeting the acute public health needs of their communities during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Dr. Marquez will share how digital tools were able to magnify his team’s community reach as they supported school test-to-stay programs through leveraging at-home antigen tests, thereby reaching the most vulnerable, namely those unable to travel to a testing site. Dr. Juluru will share how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) worked in partnership with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Association of Public Health Laboratories, and others to create a new standard for reporting at-home test results, as well as present on the recent launch of a national platform for at-home test result reporting. Dr. El-Sayed will share his perspectives on the future of public health, taking what we have learned from the pandemic to improve public health for generations to come.

Learning Objectives

Learn about how health departments around the country are implementing technology solutions to increase access to COVID-19 prevention and treatment in their communities

  • Say Yes COVID Test – contactless, touchless delivery of at-home tests to high social vulnerability index (SVI) communities
  • COVIDPlan4Health – a digital solution to reach the most vulnerable with at-home testing, telehealth evaluation, and at-home delivery of antivirals
  • MakeMyTestCount.org – enabling the public to share test results anonymously and securely

Ahead of the 2022 holiday season, we will discuss the benefits of utilizing technology in the public health practice space, challenges teams may face, and considerations for effective implementation. In particular, we will focus on the following key themes:

  • The rise of the consumer and self-efficacy in public health – at-home diagnostics and treatments
  • The evolving role of public health in the context of more consumers having access to at-home diagnostics and services where it is impractical to rely on mandatory reporting
  • Digital as a bridge, not a divide – to expand access and build trust with the most vulnerable across our communities
