Abdul El-Sayed, Juan Marquez, and Krishna Juluru as they share their experiences and perspectives on meeting the acute public health needs of their communities during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Dr. Marquez will share how digital tools were able to magnify his team’s community reach as they supported school test-to-stay programs through leveraging at-home antigen tests, thereby reaching the most vulnerable, namely those unable to travel to a testing site. Dr. Juluru will share how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) worked in partnership with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Association of Public Health Laboratories, and others to create a new standard for reporting at-home test results, as well as present on the recent launch of a national platform for at-home test result reporting. His newsletter, “The Incision,” cuts to the heart of the trends shaping our moment. He is a Contributing Editor at The New Republic and a commentator at CNN. He is the host of “America Dissected,” a podcast by Crooked Media, which goes beyond the headlines to explore the intersection between health and society. His three books include “Healing Politics,” calling for a politics of empathy to cure our epidemic of insecurity, and “Medicare for All: A Citizen’s Guide” with Dr. Micah Johnson. He is a Towsley Foundation Policymaker in Residence at the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and a Senior Fellow at the FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, teaching at the intersection of public health, public policy, and politics. In addition, he is a Scholar in Residence at Wayne State University and American University. He is formerly the health director for the city of Detroit and candidate for governor of Michigan in 2018. Juan Marquez, MD, MPH Medical Director, Washtenaw County Health Department, Livingston County Health Department, Michigan Juan Marquez, MD, MPH is the Medical Director at both the Washtenaw and Livingston County Health Departments in Michigan, where he has spent the past 4 years spearheading innovative public health initiatives to improve access to care in those communities using digital means. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, he led efforts to provide prevention and treatment options for constituents across the two counties and continues to improve access to support through public-private partnerships. As an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Dr. Marquez teaches residents completing their Preventive Medicine Residency and mentors graduate epidemiology students with a focus in applied epidemiology. Dr. Marquez obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Stanford University and his MPH from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. He participated in the inaugural Brain Clinical Fellowship program at Google and has served as a clinical consultant for health navigation technology companies. Dr. Marquez is passionate about utilizing his clinical and population-health expertise to improve the health of the community. Krishna Juluru, MD Presidential Innovation Fellow, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health and National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIH/NIBIB) Dr. Krishna Juluru is a 2021-22 Presidential Innovation Fellow, detailed to the NIH/NIBIB to help advance digital healthcare efforts surrounding RADx and other NIBIB-led initiatives. Krishna earned a B.S. with Distinction,magna cum laude, in Applied Physics from Yale University. He earned an M.D. at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he also completed a residency in Radiology and Fellowship in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He completed an Imaging Informatics Fellowship at the University of Maryland. At Cornell University Medical Center in New York City, he founded and directed the Radiology Department’s advanced imaging lab. In 2013, he moved to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to serve as the first Director of Radiology Informatics, playing key roles in data analysis, health information retrieval and aggregation, and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
