Pitt County is one of only two counties in the country participating in a take-home COVID-19 testing program starting next week.

Health Department officials say they will receive 40,000 testing kits from a program sponsored by the CDC and the National Institutes of Health. According to officials, those who sign-up will be given 25 tests in each kit to use to do a shallow swab of their nose.

Health Director Dr. John Silvernail says the "Say Yes! COVID Test" program is a pilot program aimed at increasing the amount of COVID-19 testing in a county to see if it helps reduce the spread of the virus.

“They will get that test kit, there will be 25 tests in there, with the idea that two folks in the house will test themselves three times a week for about a month, and once those test kits are exhausted, right now there is no plan to extend it or re-offer it at this point," he exaplined.

Officials say that if the program is a success, the program could become available to counties nationwide. Learn how to get your testing kit HERE.
